Jamie Hyneman, co-host of Discovery Channel’s hit series, MYTHBUSTERS, falls victim to some miscalculations on-set. The series examines the validity behind urban legends and popular rumors, challenging them against scientific analysis. A giant fan-base also participates by submitting ideas for potential episodes. Since the series first premiered, there has been an overwhelming request to test one myth in particular: Can you really sleep on a cloud?

To test the cloud legend a simple trial was devised- Step out onto a cloud and attempt to sleep on it. Special effect’s expert, Adam Savage, explained the extreme measures the crew goes through before each myth is tackled- “Well, a weighted mannequin is usually used during preliminary testing.”

A mannequin was dropped out of a plane and it plummeted straight through the clouds, exploding into the ground nearly twenty yards from set. The scientists agreed that the mannequin failed because it didn’t ‘believe.’ Jaime stepped forward to assume the test-subject’s role.

Dressed in full pajamas, suited with a buttoned butt-flap, Jaime boarded the plane. Just as they reached 14,000 feet, Jaime clutched his teddy bear against his chest and stepped out. He instantly disappeared through the clouds and somersaulted towards the earth. His body was found in a nearby hospital, after crashing through a skylight in the lobby.

Co-host and friend, Adam Savage, stated in response to the tragedy- “Myth… busted.”
